The Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH) Sector 39,on Monday, marked the Foundation Day of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Reseach (CSIR).
A lecture on Social purpose of science: Linking curiosity, creativity and compassion was delivered by Prof Anil K Gupta, from Indian Institute of Management,Ahmedabad,on the occasion.
Interacting with the students of IMTECH,Prof Gupta said,Scientific pursuits always take place in a social and institutional context. The problem we choose to work on is influenced by our own motivations, professional training, expectations from us and from society, provocations from those whom we respect or care for or whose judgements we are affected by.
Sometimes, pressure from the victims of a particular situation like disease, disability or disaffection may also influence our choice of agenda of research. But if such a system were to exist then at least five to seven per cent of the students might find long term purpose of their life and scientific inquiry, he added.
Prof Gupta also shared the lessons from the Honey Bee Network to illustrate how grass-root innovators and traditional knowledge holders use approaches and methods to solve problems, which if pursued systematically could illuminate the portals of science.
