UT checks held at grain market
Chandigarh: A team from the UT Administration conducted checks at the Grain Market,Sector 26. Discrepancies were found in the records of some shops. The team led by Sub-divisional Magistrate (South) Kavle V Parshuram visited various shops,especially those selling onions. The records maintained by the traders were not matching with those of the grain market committee. The record books have been seized. Kavle said that action would be taken against the traders after the record books are examined.
Immigration fraud
Mohali: A Mohali woman Meena alias Neena Sharma was booked on the charge of immigration fraud,the police e said here on Saturday. A resident of Bhappal village near Rajpura in Patiala,Avtar Singh reported to the police that he had approached Sharma at her consultancy firm in Mohali for sending his son to Canada,for which she demanded Rs 22 lakh and the deal was struck at Rs 19 lakh. I have paid her Rs 19 lakh but so far she has neither sent my son abroad nor returned back my money, alleged Avtar. The police have booked Sharma for criminal breach of trust and cheating under Sections 406 and 420 of the IPC but no arrest was confirmed.
Science Congress
Chandigarh: Khyati Shukla,a student of class 10 of Carmel Convent School Chandigarh represented Chandigarh in the senior category of the 98th Indian Science Congress which was hosted by the SRM University,Chennai. The Congress was held from January 3 to 6. She presented a project on optimum use of natural resources for overall socio-economic growth of villages particularly in the adjoining villages of Chandigarh. The congress was attended by many Nobel laureates.
Woman kills herself
Panchkula: A woman committed a suicide in Saketri here on Saturday. The body of Anita,wife of a labourer,was found hanging from a tree. She had three children. She was missing from her home since Friday night and was reportedly under mental stress. Her husband,Bishamber,had also lodged a complaint of her going missing in Manimajra police station.
Blankets distributed
Chandigarh: The Senior Citizens’ Welfare Association,Manimajra,distributed blankets and sweets at a mini park in the area. Blankets were given to sweepers,labourers,domestic helps and other people from slums. Area councillor Gurcharan Dass Kala inaugurated the camp.
