Heavy petting

A couple of years ago,Akanksha Saxena was busy studying with her friend when they heard a little whine. It started to drizzle, and then in no time, the whines grew louder, stronger, and more painful, till Akanksha got up and went snooping around for the source of sound.

“I stumbled upon these four stray puppies with this sad scared look. They were so tiny, and I guess were lost,” Akanksha quickly huddled in the sick, maggot infested litter, cleaned them up,made them warm, and drove them to People for Animals.

The pups have now grown into beautiful dogs, all thanks to her. “Ever since,I’ve been helping stray animals, especially pups and dogs,” wherever 28-year-old Akanksha finds an injured, lost, sick animal, she picks them up,and immediately calls up either Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) or PFA,and wheels them to safety.

An assistant Public Relations Officer with Information and PR Department,Haryana,Akanksha is known for her rescuing act. “Last week, there was a kitten stranded in our office and I got it out to safety,” she recalls many incidents where she’s stepped in and helped a stray.

“Once,an overloaded horse cart broke down leaving the poor animal’s hoof stuck in the wheel. People gathered around but didn’t know what to do!” Akanksha applied her brains and quickly told them to first unload the cart and then release his hoof.

“We got a bucketful of water for the horse and then took him to a vet,” speaking of which, she’s even argued with vets! From saving hit-and-runs and fighting out with those who are cruel to animals, she’s at the forefront. When she’s not acting as a saviour, she’s busy preparing food and buying milk for animals at SPCA and PFA where she goes every week to spend time with her ‘buddies’.

“We as humans can still voice out thoughts, our feelings… It is inhuman to not help animals,” for Akanksha helping strays has turned her life into a blessed one because of the immense amount of satisfaction and affection one gets. “I am a strong believer of karma, what you do does comes back,” and Akanksha’s got plenty!
