When youve been in a particular field for too long, critiquing it comes naturally. Bollywood composer Anandji Virji Shahs no different. Music is now commercial and has lost touch with art, he says, comparing recording in the 1960s when an entire song would be recorded at one go to now when even a word can be edited and reshaped at the last moment. There has been a drastic change. Earlier, music and lyrics were understood before being moulded into a song. The focus now is on finishing the task, he says. He modulates his voice to distinguish between the soft tones used in the past to the high pitch characteristic of most songs now. Music now is like noise; when heard for a long time,it gives a headache, says Anandji.
In town for Saturdays Mukesh Nite Yaadein Mukesh Ki at the Tagore Theatre, hes the surviving partner of the Kalyanji-Anandji duo who won acclaim for their scores in Don,Saraswatichandra,Qurbani,Safar and Kora Kagaz among others.
Simple, clear and inspired from daily life, is how he defines the songs of yesteryear. There was a warm-up session, two final rehearsals and then the recording. Everybody, right from actors, singers to dancers were present at one place. Making music has become easier now because of hi-tech equipments but conceptualising it has become complicated as all the people are never present at the time of recording, he says. English words were censored back then. Now each track has a western touch and words like kambhakt are being extensively used. Composing was a specialised field, now even children can create nice tunes on computers. Theres a flood of reality shows and each winner wants to be recorded, he says, adding that it is just not art that motivates them. Its money they are after. From being seen at weddings to funerals, they will not flinch from anything to earn that extra buck, says Anandji.
