Women are taking lead in various spheres of life, but when it comes to the presidents post of students council in various co-education colleges of the city,it is still an unexplored area. This, with the only exception of Kiranjeet Kaur,a MA (Punjabi) student, whos the first woman president of Shri Guru Gobind Singh College,Sector 26.
While I was asked to contest for the post after Radesh Sharma, the original candidate was declared ineligible, three days of campaigning saw me a winner, Kaur goes back to the first speech she hosted, one that was marked by hooting. Relatively new to politics,I am a shy girl and talking in front of heterogenous audience was difficult. But once I started, there was no looking back, the pretty lady tells us her strength of followers grew from two boys and ten girls to some hundreds in a matter of hours.
Having contested from Khalsa College Students Union,Kiranjeet is originally from Jalandhar and says that prior to these elections she was even hesitant to talk to male members of political parties. There were issues and problems pertaining to the college, but no one addressed them so I decided to stand up, she says the endeavours to make college a better place for academics and extracurricular.
Besides,I want the students council to be reachable for everybody, Kiranjeet says that she understands the pulse of students and is going to work for them with full dedication. I want central status for Panjab University,a cyber café with 70 computers and better library in college. I also am asking for a new hostel for the girls, says Kiranjeet.
Having graduated from Guru Nanak Dev University, she says for the future,I want to become a lecturer. So long!
