Free and spirited, thats how Bandish plays its music
When it comes to music, this band of boys has been exercising a right to freedom freedom especially from Bollywood music. Instead, they experiment with genres, lyrics and form unfettered by the need to conform. With founder Chris Powell on percussion,Deepak Nair on vocals,Ulrich Gomes on keyboards, and Desmond Powell on the guitar, this Delhi-based band is in town for the Jashn-e-Azadi concert. Our stress has always been on producing a different kind of music, one that has a flavour of all genres and is not restrictive in any sense, says Chris,a former Euphoria member.
Now that they have signed a three-year-three album deal with Universal Music,Bandish is also promoting their first album with Universal. Its actually a second album for the band, after Kaise Kahoon which we released in 2006, he says. Titled Bandish, the album has sufi, rock, pop, folk and the usual tadka of national and international collaborations. We have collaborated with international percussionist Pete Lockett, who has sung in our album. The idea is to experiment with every genre and bring people from different musical backgrounds on one platform, says Nair.
With 15 years of musical experience, the band members have been together since 2005. From holding fort on MTV World Chart Express in 2006,B4U Music Charts and Channel V-Top 20,Bandish went on to win a nomination in the The Best Band of the Year (2006-2007) at the Jack Daniels Rock Awards-2007.
Weve been on the beat path, through the highs and lows and know each other very well. Maybe thats the secret of our staying together. Other bands have members getting trapped in marriage, careers and so on, feels Desmond. While there are free downloads available on their website, its the tours and gigs that keeps their music and fan following alive. We manage to reach out to a greater number of people through concerts than any other channel, says Chris, now looking forward to a collaboration with entertainment portal http://www.hungama.com.
In the meantime, catch them at the concert on I-Day eve at Sukhna Lake.
