Ricchi Kaypee, the only son of senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former MP Mohinder Singh Kaypee, was killed in a four-vehicle collision in Jalandhar late on Saturday night. The accident, which took place near Mata Rani Chowk in the posh Model Town area, also left two others critically injured.
According to the police, Ricchi, 36, was driving his Fortuner towards Model Town Market when a speeding Hyundai Creta coming from the opposite direction rammed into his SUV around 10.55 pm. The impact was so severe that Ricchi sustained a broken neck bone along with fatal head and body injuries. He was rushed first to Global Hospital and later referred to Patel Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The Creta driver fled the scene after the crash. The police have identified him as Prince, a businessman from Shekha Bazaar and owner of Shan Enterprises. At the time of the accident, his family members were also in the car. The police have registered an FIR and are searching for him.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Naresh Dogra said three of the four vehicles involved had been seized. While one CCTV footage is blurry, the police are scanning other cameras in the area to ascertain the exact sequence of events.
Chain collision caught on CCTV
A CCTV recording of the incident has surfaced, showing the Creta colliding with Ricchi’s Fortuner head-on near Dub Shot Café. The force of the collision pushed a stationary Grand Vitara into a showroom railing, injuring a taxi driver named Gurvinder and damaging his parked Ertiga.
Within seconds, vehicle parts were scattered over nearly 50 ft. The husband-wife duo inside the Grand Vitara were seriously injured and are undergoing treatment.
Relatives said that Ricchi had telephoned the family’s domestic help moments after the crash. Mohinder Singh, along with his family members, reached the spot and helped take Ricchi to hospital. His sister and several relatives are abroad, and the last rites will be performed after their arrival.
Family sources said Ricchi had stepped out around 10.30 pm to return a phone to a friend. “He was calm by nature, never drove rashly, and had studied law,” said a source.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa of Congress, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal, and Union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu expressed their condolences.
A former state Congress president, Mohinder Singh had served as the party’s MLA for Jalandhar South three times. He is now an SAD leader. His father Darshan Singh Kaypee was also a five-time MLA. Jalandhar South was later renamed as Jalandhar West.
