All were outsiders, travelling in PUSU presidents car
The police arrested five persons inside the Panjab University campus, who were found in possession of sharp-edged weapons,on Thursday. The five had entered the university in the vehicle of PUSU president Uday Singh Wirring in the morning. Uday was not in the car.
All five were outsiders and had entered in an Innova car, when the security personnel on duty nabbed them. The incident took place at 8.30 am,when the car entered the university from gate number 3 (Sector 25 side). It was stopped near the post office by a security personnel for routine checking, and a toy pistol, three daggers and baseball bats were recovered from the car.
The occupants of the car were identified as Sukhdev Singh alias Sukha,Kewal Singh and Jagsir Singh. They were booked under Section 25 and 26 of the Arms Act. The other two who were apprehended were Gurbaz Singh and Gagandeep Singh. They were arrested for preventive action. All the five hail from Punjab.
The police said only Kewal Singh has a notorious past,as he has been booked for his involvement in heinous crimes by the Moga police. Three separate cases have been registered against him in Moga, including that of preparing for dacoity under Section 399,402 of the IPC. Besides,he has also been booked under Section 382,323 of the IPC and a case has been registered against him in Sadar police station. In addition,he has been booked for preventive action, too. He originally hails from Ferozpur.
All the other accused have also been involved in violent incidents and have been booked for preventive action by the Punjab police in the past. The police are yet to question PUSU president Uday Singh,to whom the car belonged. Uday was in news in April this year, when five persons had attacked him outside his house in Sector 11. On April 29,the police had arrested five youths for opening fire at his house and for setting his car on fire.
Since PU is gearing up for elections, the active party members seem to have started amassing weapons for their defence. We are investigating further, said Sukhbir Rana,SHO,Sector 11 police station.
Meanwhile, rival groups clashed in the DAV college Sector 10 in the afternoon, following which more than 60 policemen were deployed to avoid any emergency. According to sources, supporters of SOPU and PUSU party engaged in heated scuffle over the issue of counselling for admission of new students. The arguments took place in the college canteen. The students, however, vanished as the police arrived.
