Filing returns not taxing this time

Times are a-changing. The three Q’s of queues, questions and quarrels that dominated the filing of income tax returns, especially on the last day, were pleasantly missing on Friday. The tax-payers were in for a surprise,as beverages, snacks and chilled water was being served to them in an air-conditioned hall of Rajasthan Bhawan in Sector 33,where the returns were being filed.

To iron out a few wrinkles of senior citizens,a separate queue for them was marked at all the 20 counters set up for various wards. “Besides them, there were separate rows for women and physically-challenged,” said GS Randhawa,Income Tax Commissioner-I

CIT (TDS) PC Modi said,“We have also set up a helpdesk, which is a new feature. Besides, special staff has been deputed to guide the tax-payers.”

Though the new saral form will be implemented from next year, the tax-payers were not fretting over the old “complicated” form. “The I-T staff has filled in the tricky columns. Filing returns is a breeze now,as we don’t have to stand in queues,” said Shahi Munjal,a Sector 46-C resident.

But if you are hard pressed for time, take the advice of retired High Court official Satish Kumar Sehgal,a Sector 28-D resident. “I was through with the process in a few minutes,as I had filled the form at home,” beamed Sehgal, while sipping tea.

An I-T employee at the counter said though the official closing time was 5.30 pm,it would be extended if the tax-payers continued to come in. “We will not let anyone go disappointed,” he added.

When asked as to why there was less rush this time as compared to previous years, when filing returns meant pushing, shoving and sweating,Randhawa said: “People are also going in for e-filing. Besides, one counter was opened a few days ago for bulk filing by tax professionals and chartered accountants.”
