In the opening shots of Zees new period drama Jodha Akbar from the house of Balaji Telefilms, the camera zooms in on Agra, reels past the tourists, and takes the viewers to the tomb of Akbar and Jodha. Light filters through the carved windows and two shadows emerge from the tombs. They are the eternal lovers and soulmates,Jodha and Akbar, speaking to each other,of how their love story still resonates after 400 years. Its a hauntingly impressive start but this is where the experimentation ends and the drama begins. The magnum opus of a serial, with Om Puris theatrical voiceover, goes on to showcase Akbar, the terrible. His insatiable hunger for war,for victory, for instilling fear, for amassing power, his ruthlessness and heartlessness the makers paint a cruel picture.
It stands in stark contrast to Jodhas simplicity, humility, courage, compassion and conviction. She is the Rajput princess who rescues injured birds, reasons with her father, fights for honour and stands by her friends and family. The show is yet to make a big bang, and the special effects are a bit too tacky.
The first two episodes are textbook presentation: bring in the characters, one by one and let the viewers know them at a steady pace. The secrets unravel as one moves along. So far, weve been treated to the shrewd Bairam Khan (played by Naved Aslam) as the brains behind Akbars wrath and tyranny,Jodhas beloved brother Sujamal (played Vicky Batra),Jodhas father Raja Bharmal (Rajeev Saxena) and mother,Rani Menawati (Natasha Sinha). Theres a clichéd old hag of a soothsayer too in Shaguni Bai (Kalyani Trivedi) who foretells Jodhas future with Mughals.
Not even two episodes old,and the show has reportedly invited the displeasure of the Rajputs. They contest that there was no Jodha Bai in Rajput history. Whether it was a publicity stunt or news,Ekta Kapoor aired it with her show, and even put the no resemblance disclaimer.
Rajat Tokass fair and lovely skin and soft looks fail to give that hint of authority and royalty to Akbars persona. Paridhi Sharma as Jodha, unfortunately, looks too simple and slightly older than Akbar. One cannot resist to draw comparisons especially when ones been treated to Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer film,Jodhaa Akbar.
Meanwhile,we are waiting for more characters: Ashwini Kalsekar as Mahamanga,a pivotal mother figure in Akbars life who saved him from the clutches of death across many a battle. Chetan Hansraj will play the role of Adham Khan, the mighty son of Mahamanga who has an eye on the Mughal throne and Smiley Suri as Ruqaiya Sultan Begum,Akbars first wife.
