Electronics and Computer Science branches maintains the top position in most preferred engineering branches at city engineering institutes. While IT,which was considered to be one of the preferred options, has slipped to third position along with electrical engineering. Civil engineering is moving upwards in the preference list of aspiring engineers.
Computer Science is preferred over IT as IT limits the students to only one field while with computer science the students have more options once they graduate.
Talking to the faculty members at PEC University of Technology, they revealed that civil engineering is once again gaining popularity. Prof Sanjeev Sofat,Dean Academics at PEC said,Civil engineering was once very popular among students, but had lost its demand. Now it is emerging as a preferred branch of engineering. Electronics and Computer Science are running parallel to each other in the top position.
Another change that has been witnessed at these engineering institutes is the increase in admission of girls in recent years. Though the ratio of girls has doubled over the last five years from 20 to 40 per cent, branches like mechanical are still dominated by boys. The stark difference in the ratio is witnessed at PEC University of Technology where among 280 students in mechanical engineering, only two are girls.
Prof Sanjeev Kumar, convenor for admissions said,Talking about the preference among girls, electronics is the most opted branch followed by computer science while mechanical and metallurgy are the least. Civil engineering is still preferred by girls as there are around 15 girls in each batch of civil engineering,
