Drivin’ Mr Kapoor

It’s time that the government realises they work for us,and not we for them,Kunal Kapoor takes on a democratic turn of conversation

Actors make lousy politicians. Great public attraction and speakers, but lousy politicians. Guess too much of blind faith in the system and that passion for change can boomerang pretty badly. But exceptions are always there. And after today’s ‘idea exchange’,if there’s anything apart from acting that’ll suit actor Kunal Kapoor,it’s politics. For sure. The man’s already a part of a community in Mumbai which is seeking government accountability post terror attacks. They are in fact going ahead with a PIL regarding the same. Then,Kunal’s reaching out to schools and colleges with his speech on ‘importance of voting’. “It’s foolish not to vote! I simply cannot understand when they say,‘par kiske liye’! Vote for somebody who is better,it’s your right,” Kapoor gets into a true blue Rang De Basanti mode and makes ‘sweeping’ statements. “Politics is perceived as something dirty, but it’s not. It’s the place where young people have to come forward, fearless and strive for change,” Kunal firm when he adds,“it’s time that the government realises they work for us,and not we for them.”

In town for the launch of new Logan Edge Connect by Mahindra Renault, the actor’s happy talking about anything but the films. After a ‘jazzy’ opening, like a true brand ambassador,he ranks the car top notch. “Personally,I look for something that’s not advisable – speed,” he laughs, focusing on style and luxury too. “I love cars, especially the ones that truly indulges your senses,” his favourite’s the Aston Martin. Talk road sense and safety, and he shoots,“the fact that I have to think too much about it means it doesn’t exist in this country. So my advise, always have the seat belt on.”

Back to the inevitable – films. “I’m doing Rahul Dholakia’s Lamha,” he talks with an irresistible passion about the project. “It’s centered on Kashmir, and our attempt was to look at the Kashmir situation from as many point of views we could. Till now,the subjects have been myopic, there’s been a narrow limited focus, but we’ve tried to deal as democratically as possible,” Kapoor, who plays a young political leader in it,says they’ve brought out the common man’s story. “How he carries on with his life, the army, the politician’s sides too have been explored,” Kapoor feels that the Kashmir issue is a complex one and the films’s a reflection of what’s happening. “Sitting in a city,we hardly come to know what’s happening there,” Kunal adds how they were mentally prepared for a tough shooting schedule. “It was demanding, but the people are extremely warm there,” he says.

With a pretty ‘fertile imagination’ in place,Kunal’s onto his next project, his own script. It’s complete, but as Kunal says,“with a script, you are never finished.” It’s a romantic comedy, that’s all we get! “I’ve always been writing,it’s a platform to express the optimistic self,” he puts aside blogging at the moment for it “demands a lot of discipline and you have to be regular with it,which I am not.”

Madhuri Dixit is still a goddess, and Aamir Khan’s the guy he wants to work with it. “I’m more of a character actor,a role player rather than a star player,” says Kunal. Maybe that’s why he chooses a different character each time, and prefers to window dress it himself. “I feel the most fashionable are the ones who express themselves through their clothes, and I personally find the idea of someone telling me what to wear very funny. Fashion is an extension of the self, and you can’t let anybody else define it for you!” But it’s recession that’s made my pants shorter,he’s quite a quick wit. Told ya,fertile imagination,he winks!
