Drama Queen

TV actress Roshni Chopra, who debuts in Bollywood with Phhir, revels in the dramatic side of acting

It was three years ago when Roshni Chopra had a chance meeting with filmmaker Vikram Bhatt. It was on the sets of Zee Music’s chat show Cinemascope, which Chopra was anchoring.

Time passed and Chopra forgot about it. Till one day, when she got a call from his office offering her a role in their next production. “It was the suspense thriller Phhir,” says Chopra, who really had no grand plans of debuting in Bollywood, but said yes to the film because of the character she was chosen to play,Sia. “Through Phhir,I got to experience both sides of acting — a romantic, bubbly girl in the first half, and an edgy character in the second half,” she says.

A television girl,Chopra assures the film has changed nothing about her. “Television still comes first for me,and I am already doing two TV shows,” she says,as she goes on to talk about being a ‘hot looking host’ on Comedy Circus and also hosting an upcoming travel-adventure reality show called Jeele Yeh Pal on Star.

Chopra was also the winner of Imagine’s Desi Girls last year, following which she undertook another adventure — discovering the funny bone in her. “I am a true blue drama actor. I am comfortable with dramatic stuff but was petrified of comedy. It was in Comedy Circus that I managed to face this fear.”

There are other offers coming her way, both in films and in television. While she is considering films,Chopra prefers to stick to her ‘anchoring’ profile on TV. Chopra says that television is sometimes uni-dimensional in its treatment of stories and characters. “It’s either Plain Janes or super vamps — it’s all black and white. There’s is nothing to showcase your talent on,” she rues in frustration.

So,being a host works. “I hold the reigns of the show, and I love calling the shots,” she says.
