Dal Khalsa tells chief minister to end uncertainty over varsity

Not convinced by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s recent assurances that he would take people’s sentiments into account before making a final decision on the status of the Khalsa College,Dal Khalsa on Tuesday shot off a letter to him urging to end uncertainty over the matter and withdraw the “letter of intent” issued to the management by the government.

In a communiqué faxed to the CM office, party spokesman Kanwar Pal Singh has asked him to reject the proposal of converting the college into private university,as it was not only ruining the prospects of students but also undermining the aura attached with the name of the college. He said that anger was brewing and people were fed up with lip service.

Asking Badal not to back the proposal, which is a brainchild of Khalsa College Governing Council president Satyajit Singh Majithia and secretary Rajinder Mohan Singh Chinna, the letter stated: “On one side are the people of Punjab and the Panth and on other, one family (read Majithia) patronage by the deputy CM. If you go by the wishes of the people, they will shower respect on you. In case you choose to side with relatives, people won’t forgive you.”

Khalsa College is a part of the collective Sikh heritage and any tinkering even with its name would be resisted tooth and nail,it added.

Blaming the chief minister for buying time,Singh said that Badal was playing a hide and seek game with the stakeholders. “The people of the state have already expressed their opposition to the proposal through articles, letters and statements. Even Akal Takht jathedar,Chief Khalsa Deewan,is in favour of preserving the name and status of the college. What else are you looking for?” reads the letter.
