At a time when fashion trends change with every passing season, can jewellery be far behind? Going by the ongoing display of contemporary jewellery designs at the Jewellery Design and Technology Institute (JDTI) in Sector 35,put together by its alumni,it seems there’s more to it than just metal and style. Inspired by traditional Indian crafts such as bamboo weaving, filigree and even art on glass, former students who are now well absorbed in the industry, presented their take.

“It gives me immense pleasure to witness the careers of the students flourishing and to see the innovation they bring to the field of jewellery design. Over the years, our students have continuously made an impact in the jewellery industry. Apart from getting placed with brands like Tanishq,Damas (Dubai),Asmi,Nakshatra,Mehrasons,Anmol Jewellers to name only a few,our students have achieved accolades by winning various international and national design awards,” informed Ritu Malik,CEO of JDTI as the alumni showcased the collection.

The young panel of designers featured included Neha Verma, winner of World Gold Council award for ‘Most Innovative Collection 2008’. “Each year the World Gold Council confers this prestigious award to a collection which amalgamates concept, material, technique, inspiration and design,” informed Malik as we browsed through the young designer’s work. “I am now running my signature brand under the name ‘Desire’,” mentioned Verma who rates cocktail rings as still going strong. Also showcasing his award-winning line-up was Rajiv Khatri whose collection featured an exquisite necklace, bangle and a pendant handcrafted using bamboo, cane and metal. This young and talented designer was also ranked first in the Online Design Project with Tanishq and was selected by the company for the internship programme. Experimenting with glass was Mayank Verma, winner of last year’s ‘Most Commercially Viable Collection’. Selected by Gitanjali Group for an internship programme, the young designer is currently working in the same company and handling their production unit in Mumbai. “It’s always good to experiment and jewellery designs are ever evolving,” he remarked.

The showcase would be open for public viewing on January 20 and 21 at the institute.
