HC asks CHB to submit list of vacant flats
Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday directed Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) to furnish the list of flats lying vacant under various categories in the city. The direction was passed during the resumed hearing of a petition filed by oustees alleging that despite flats being available,the CHB was not allotting the same. It was further alleged that several flats were lying vacant under several categories. The High Court has given four weeks time to CHB to submit the entire list of such flats.
Four persons held for theft and snatching
Mohali: The Mohali police have nabbed four people in connection with various cases of theft and chain-snatching in the town. All four of them have been booked for theft under sections 379 and 382 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). During preliminary investigations,it was found out one of the accused is a drug-addict and a case of attempt to murder has already been registered against him in Amritsar. The other accused,too,had several cases of theft and preparation of dacoity registered against them. The police said the accused confessed that they were involved in various acts purse-snatching,mobile-snatching and theft of other items,the police said.
Man gets one-year RI under NDPS Act
Chandigarh: A local court on Wednesday sentenced a man to one year of rigorous imprisonment,holding him guilty of possessing narcotics. The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Shalini S Nagpal announced the sentence while imposing a penalty of Rs 5,000 on the guilty,under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance (NDPS) Act. On October 2,a police team which was present at naka near Sector 55,first saw the convict,Vijay Kumar coming from the side of Sector 56,holding a white sack. However,as soon as he saw the police party,he tried to throw the sack and run away. A constable chased him and caught him. He was found in possession of two kilograms of ganja.He was subsequently arrested and was booked under section 20 (Punishment for contravention in relation to cannabis plant and cannabis) of NDPS Act.
Charges framed against corrupt MC employee
Chandigarh: The special CBI court on Wednesday framed charges against an employee of the municipal corporation (MC) under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The accused,Balraj,had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from the complainant. Complainant Jaspinder Singh,a resident of Manimajra,approached Balraj who held the post of a patwari in the corporation regarding the transfer of some property which was in the name of his mother. The complainant wanted to get the property to be transferred in his name. Balraj allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 2 lakh to process his paper work. Following this,the complainant approached the CBI.
Truck-driver arrested for hitting cyclist
Chandigarh: The Chandigarh police on Wednesday arrested a truck driver for allegedly hitting the vehicle to a cyclist near Modella light point. The accused identified as Sushil Kumar,was arrested on the spot. The cyclist suffered injuries on his limbs and was taken to a hospital. A case of rash driving and of causing hurt by acts endangering personal safety of others has been registered against the accused at Industrial Area police station.
Man booked in hit-and-run case
Chanidigarh: A resident of Kajheri village alleged that driver of a school van on Tuesday hit his wife and fled from the spot. According to the police,the victim who was riding a cycle was hit by the van and suffered multiple injuries. She was taken to PGI for treatment. A case of rash driving and of causing hurt by acts endangering personal safety of others has been registered at Sector 36 police station.
Womans bag snatched in Sector 50
Chandigarh: A resident of Sector 50 alleged that an unidentified person on a motorcycle snatched her bag and fled from the spot on Tuesday. According to the police,the unidentified person snatched the victims bag while she was sitting on her scooter. The victim chased the motorcyclist till Sector 69,but the miscreant managed to escape. The bag contained Rs. 8,000 cash,a mobile phone and some documents,police said. A case has been registered in this regard.
Bridge to come up over Jagatpura drain: DC
Mohali: A new bridge worth Rs 3.25 crore will soon be constructed over the drain near Jagatpura village in Mohali,said Deputy Commissioner Tejinderpal Singh Sidhu on Wednesday. Connectivity to around 20 villages had recently suffered after a bridge had been damaged and subsequently closed to traffic. Sidhu said the new bridge would be constructed at the same location where the old bridge stood,adding that the new bridge would be wider and stronger. Its construction is expected to be completed within eight months.
DC warns vendors of sweets and milk products
CHANDIGARH: UT Deputy Commissioner Mohd Shayin,on Wednesday,issued a notice that all shopkeepers or vendors selling milk items,sweets and other related items should maintain quality standards with respect to milk products,sweets and khoya that they sold. Teams of the Health department,Food and Supplies department and the office of Deputy Commissioner will carry out surprise checks on shops regularly,enforcing strict action against defaulters.
19th annual gurbani kirtan to be held Oct 26
CHANDIGARH: The Guru Har Rai Charitable Trust will organise its 19th annual Gurbani Kirtan on October 26 where around 30 couples from across Punjab and Haryana will get married as part of the mass marriage function under the aegis of the trust. The trust will also organise a blood donation camp during the function to be held at Sector 40-B.
Housing board employees hold rally
CHANDIGARH: Supporting the agitation programme announced by Chandigarh UT Subordinate Services Federation on October 31,the UT Housing Board Employees Union held a rally in Sector 9 on Wednesday. The union demanded sweepers be appointed on regular basis in the municipal corporation,immediate purchase of new mini buses in CTU,among other things.
Pathankot SSP discharged from hospital
Mohali: Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Pathankot S K Kalia was discharged from Fortis Hospital on Wednesday. Kalia was injured on September 22 in an accident on the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway when the driver of the car he was travelling in tried to overtake a truck. Principal correspondent for national daily Hindustan Times,Jasdeep Singh Malhotra,was killed in the accident while Walia had suffered serious injuries.
