It’s a treat for the cinephile. In fact,make that a treasure of the best there is in cinema,and in case you still haven’t blocked your holidays,then please do for these seven days will unspool 200 films from 56 countries! Come October 29 and the 11th edition of the Mumbai Film Festival (MFF) gets underway. Organised by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI),the 11th edition of the festival is scheduled to take place from October 29 to November 5 in Mumbai.

“All the sections of the festival carry some of the best films made the world over,” comments filmmaker Shyam Benegal,chairperson of MAMI. “Whether it’s the thematic or the director’s point of view that makes every film so distinctive,our audience will be able to see and experience for themselves. And be enriched.”

Offering something to every film buff,the festival is divided into five sections viz. International Competition for the First Feature Films of Directors,World Cinema,Indian Showcase,Dimensions Mumbai and Retrospectives. There is another section which is out of competition called Above The Cut in which debut features which are extra-ordinary but could not be included in the competition section will be highlighted. The World Cinema section would screen a spectrum of the latest and the very best of cinema handpicked from festivals around the globe.

Some of the Indian films to be screened include Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s Janala and Rituparno Ghosh’s Abohomaan,along with Umesh Kulkarni’s Vihir and Renuka Shahane’s film Rita and Madhupal’s The Crown (Thalappavu). A brand new section Real Reel will showcase a selection of high quality feature length documentaries. This year,the festival is introducing an International Competition for the First Feature Films of Directors with one of the biggest cash awards in the world. The Best First Feature Film gets a cash award of Rs 50 lakh,while the Jury Grand Prize winner is awarded with Rs. 25 lakh cash. The festival will also hold a retrospective of the Greek master Theo Angelopoulos. While he’ll be bestowed with International Lifetime Achievement Award,Shashi Kapoor will be honoured with Indian Lifetime Achievement Award.
