You know the words, they are right their lined up in a perfect grammatical order in your head, yet when you open your mouth, all people hear is a stutter,a stammer, followed by words which just come crashing at your feet. “That’s what happens when you lack the confidence, the courage and conviction to express without fear of any kind,” observes Chetan Sood, and in the same breath gives the answer too – “The Toastmasters Club,a place where you can openly share your thoughts and let go of inhibitions.” With this,Sood opens the doors to the Panchkula Toastmasters Club and takes seat as the President and Founder Member.
An international non-profit organization since 1924,Toastmasters,adds Sood,is an answer for all those who still get stage frights and nervous attacks while addressing a group or a crowd. “The club aims at helping people become more competent and comfortable in front of an audience. We,as a team, work on effective communication, good listening and leadership skills,” tells Sood. Spanning 106 countries with nearly 2,50,000 members worldwide,Toastmasters,a voluntary organization,is now finally open to the residents of Panchkula and have completed three sessions already.
“Everyone loves a personalitied person, someone who can talk-walk with ease. This club will not only help you organize and present your thoughts in a clear and thoughtful manner,it will provides a healthy, uncritical platform for expression. We understand the fear that may rest in the speakers mind but with gentle persuasion every person can overcome it. We have had success stories that give us the incentive to help more.” As we hear about how people have gained the confidence to start their own companies, excel at work; we can’t help but wonder what the secret formula is. “Our booklets and guides are extremely useful at explaining techniques and providing tips. While we do not have any professionals,we make use of every member who undertake different profiles in the meetings such as evaluating, checking grammar etc. Apart from this, the general atmosphere of motivation helps everyone to open up and overcome their initial bouts of reluctance.” Here, participants practice and learn skills by filling a meeting role, ranging from giving a prepared speech or an impromptu one to serving as timer, evaluator or grammarian. The best bit is that you can transfer your membership to any of the hundreds of clubs all over India itself, apart from those the world over. “It’s a great way of socialising as well, especially if you’re in a new city!” he says. Whether you’re shy, introvert or plain curious to know how to improve your personality, drop in at DAV College in Panchkula where they hold their meetings every Sunday between 10:30 and 11:30 am. In fact, there’s one tomorrow,May 31. The fees is a nominal Rs 350 per month. So go on,tap the confident you. For more log on to http://www.toastmasters.org.
