Chandigarh tail wags to turn tables

A spirited batting display from the Chandigarh tailenders helped the team take the vital first innings lead and garner three points in their match against Ludhiana on the last day of the four-day Punjab State Inter District U-22 cricket tournament played at the Punjab Agriculture University Grounds in Ludhiana on Saturday.

The Chandigarh lower order batsmen not only showed their batting skills but also built useful partnerships to help the team amass a huge total and gain the first innings lead. Abhilash Sharma,the overnight batsman,completed his century and helped the team pocket three important points.

Resuming from their overnight score of 347 for 6,Chandigarh,in reply to Ludhiana’s first innings total of 442,lost their first wicket of the day when centurion Veer Karan Goyal was dismissed by Nikhil for 134 runs,which he scored off 516 deliveries and contained 16 boundaries. Veer put on 146 runs for the seventh wicket with Abhilash.

Udit Hari Mehta then joined Abhilash and the duo added 109 runs for the eight wicket in just 25 overs to further bolster the team’s total and help Chandigarh gain the first inning’s lead. Abhilash then got out to Sukhjinder but not before completing a superb century. He blasted 179 runs off 255 balls embellished with 21 boundaries and six huge sixes.

His dismissal,however,did not affect the following lower order batsmen as they batted with confidence while Ludhiana bowlers toiled hard to contain the host team from scoring. Udit (69),meanwhile,put on 95 runs for the ninth wicket with Vishal Thind while the latter also went on to complete his half-century (54). Chandigarh innings finally folded at 607 rusn in 220.1 overs. Sukhjinder emerged as the most successful bowler for Ludhiana with 3 for 154.

Outright win for Amritsar

HALF-centuries each from Karan Sharma (85) and Aman Bawa (53) inspired Amritsar to a clinical five-wicket victory over Mohali in their match played at Gandhi Grounds. Needing 174 runs in 53 runs for an outright win,Karan and Bawa batted with autority and steered the team to victory.

Earlier,resuming from their overnight score of 227 for 5,Mohali were all out for 335 in 122.5 overs. Overnight batsman ban Kanwar Virk went on to hammer 93 runs. He added 76 valuable runs for Mohali with Narinder Rathore (26). Vinay Chaudhary picked up four wickets for Amritsar.

Chasing 174 runs,Amritsar achieved the target in 40.5 overs for the loss of five wickets. Karan Sharma blasted 85 off 122 balls with the help of 13 timely boundaries and one towering six. He was involved in 122-run partnership for the second wicket with Bawa who smashed 53 off 81 deliveries.

Jalandhar earn three points

JALANDHAR batsmen continued to impress as they collected three points against Patiala due to their two-run lead from the first innings in the match that was played at Burlton Park.

Patiala,resuming from their overnight score of 277 for 3,declared their innings at 350 for 7 in 78 overs. They lost overnight batsman Karan Kaila (55) who added 116 runs for the fourth wicket with Jeevanjot. The latter continued to prosper and was finally out while going for an ambitious shot for 162 off 105 balls. His knock included 23 boundaires. Patiala declared their innings at 350 for 7 in 78 overs and set a target of 349 for Jalandhar to get in 81 overs. Subek Gill and Yogesh Kumar took two wickets each for Jalandhar.

Inr eply,Jalandhar openers Nitish Sharma and Pargat Singh gave a brisk start to the team by putting on 68 runs. Nitish was joined by Love Kumar as the duo hammered 108 runs for the second wicket before Nitish was caught by Prabhjot off Karan for 88 off 137 balls. Love also departned after completing his half-century (57 off 100 balls). Siddharth Sharma (36) and Himanshu Satyawan (52 not out) were at the crease when stumps were drawn for the match with Jalandhar’s score board reading 294 for 4 in 78 overs.
