CBI must produce accused in kidney racket case: Court

During resumed hearing today in the kidney racket case,not all the accused were again present. Dr Upinder,who is lodged in Guntur,could not be produced in the court.

During resumed hearing today in the kidney racket case,not all the accused were again present. Dr Upinder,who is lodged in Guntur ( Andhra Pradesh),could not be produced in the court.

Lodged in Jaipur jail,Dr Amit and his brother Jeevan and Dr Krishan,Lab Technician Manoj and middleman Giyasuddin,all lodged in Ambala jail,were present in the court. Along with them nurse Linda,Dr Saraj and middleman Jagdish,all of whom are running on bail,were also present.

To ensure the presence of all the nine accused in the case,CBI Special Judge AS Narang ordered that it is now the CBI which has to produce them from different jails. Earlier,jail officials of Jaipur and Guntur were producing the accused in the CBI court.

The kidney racket had surfaced on January 24,2008,when the Uttar Pradesh and Gurgaon police raided a house in Sector 22,Gurgaon. Over 500 people were lured for donation of their kidneys and were allegedly paid between Rs 50,000 and Rs 70,000.

The kidneys were then allegedly sold for between Rs 8 lakh and 10 lakh each. According to the CBI,the mastermind,Dr Amit Kumar,used to run two hospitals under the banner of Liberty Health Care Private Limited in Gurgaon.

On May 9,the Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered completion of the whole process in the case by July 15.
