HP employees’ body seeks hike in I-T exemptions

SHIMLA: The HP Employees’ Confederation has approached Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee with a demand to hike the limit of income tax exemptions for government employees in the wake of unprecedented inflation in the recent past. In a letter to Mukherjee,confederation president Vinod Kumar has requested him to consider raising the exemption limit for males upto Rs 2.5 lakh against the present ceiling of Rs 1.6 lakh in the coming budget. For women employees,the confederation has sought a tax relaxation till the income of upto Rs 3 lakh per month against the present Rs 1.9 lakh. Another demand of the confederation is to make the dearness allowance tax free. The employees’ body has also submitted the charter of demands to Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal to take up the matter with the Centre.

Play to remember theatre artiste

SHIMLA: Mughal-e-Azam,a play,will be staged at Gaiety Theatre in Shimla from February 22 to 24. The performance will be dedicated to renowned national theatre artiste Manohar Singh who was from Shimla,said Munir Cultural Foundation convenor and director of the play,Parvesh Jassal. The play is being organised in collaboration with the North Zone Cultural Centre,Patiala,and the state’s language,art and culture department. Manohar Singh’s brother and son will be present during the performance on February 24 as chief guests. Munir Cultural Foundation’s past performances at the Gaiety include Mirza Ghalib,Faisla Kal Hoga,Toba Tek Singh,Holi,Conjunctivitis and Fandi.

Ground managers for sports promotion

Chandigarh: The Haryana government will appoint 168 ground managers and an equal number of groundsmen for promotion of sports. Sukhbir Kataria,Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs,said this on Sunday after dedicating a community centre built at Rs 50 lakh in Gurgaon. The sports hub of the district,Bhiwani,will have the highest number of 18 ground managers followed by 17 in Rohtak,16 in Sonepat and between 13 and three three in other districts. The posts would be filled on contract basis and applications have already been invited. Desirous candidates could send their applications to the director,sports and youth affairs,the minister said.

Panasonic to invest Rs 1,000 cr in Jhajjar

CHANDIGARH: Electronics giant Panasonic will set up the first Eco Idea Factory of the country at Dadritoi village in Jhajjar district with an investment of about Rs 1,000 crore over an area of 76 acres. Its foundation stone will be laid on February 23. Rohtak MP Deepinder Singh Hooda said the factory would start production within a year and provide employment to thousands of people.
