CHANDIGARH: Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Monday directed the Department of Local Government to clear all pending proposals to ensure basic civic amenities in all cities and towns across the state within a week. Vacant posts of executive officers in the municipal councils will be filled to ensure smooth implementation of the ongoing development schemes. Badal also asked representatives of various constituencies to prioritise the work to be executed in their area in view of the demands of the local residents. He was presiding over a series of meetings with the delegations led by senior leaders from Sangrur,Bhawanigarh,Dhuri,Malerkotla,Amargarh,Mandi Ahmedgarh,Barnala,Dhanuala,Longowal,Dirba and Sunam.

Residents walk for pollution-free Shimla

Shimla: Shimla-based NGO Ashadeep organised its second ‘Walk Shimla Walk’ campaign on Monday. Sushil Tanwar,president of Ashadeep,said: “The purpose was to popularise walking as a mode of transportation. Walking will reduce energy consumption and help improve the environment. People will also be able to save more money and become healthier.” The walk was flagged off by Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal. He said the government was considering a proposal to put up hoardings to motivate tourists to switch off their car air-conditioners and enjoy the clean,healthy and pollution-free environment of the hills.

Stop flow of dirty water to Rajasthan: MLA

JALANDHAR: The MLA from Rajasthan’s Suratgarh,Gangajal Meel,has written to deputy commissioners of Jalandhar and Ludhiana,requesting them to ensure that the flow of dirty water in Kala Sanghia drain be stopped,as the polluted water from this drain enters Rajasthan,where it is consumed by the people. The letter added that the people of Rajasthan will support environmentalist Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal and the people of Doaba region,who have announced that they will take it upon themselves to stop the flow of dirty water in the drain on May 18. “The people of Bikaner will plug the flow of the dirty water,” he added.
