Farmer leader dies in road accidentBalkar Singh Dakonda,president of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta),and his wife Jasveer Kaur died in a road accident near Aam Khaas Bhag in Sirhind on Monday night. According to his reports,the two were going to Jasveers native village,around four kilometres from Sirhind,on a motorcycle when the accident took place. Jasveer worked as a teacher and had retired only last month. The couples son,Aprampal Singh,is currently studying in Australia. The cremation of the 55-year-old farmer leader and his wife will be held at Dakonda village on Wednesday. Dr Jagmohan Singh,a close associate of the deceased leader,said: We have been told that an unidentified vehicle hit their motorcycle,leaving them seriously injured. Jasveer reportedly died on the spot,while Dakonda breathed his last at the PGI in Chandigarh on Tuesday afternoon. Powercom SDO booked as farmers protestThe Lopoke police booked Punjab State Power Corporation SDO Paramjit Singh on charges of theft and intimidation after farmers,led by the Kisan Sangharsh Committee (KSC),protested against his highhandedness. According to farmers,the SDO had misbehaved with them and snatched their mobile phones when they were holding a protest against him recently at Chogawan. The police said the case had been under Sections 323,379 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code.
