Acting on the recommendations of a three-member committee, the Congress Friday suspended Bir Devinder Singh from the party for six years on charges of indiscipline. The move comes despite Congress strategist Prashant Kishor’s efforts to resolve the differences between the former Deputy Speaker and Punjab Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh.

The three-member committee, headed by MLA Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, had Thursday suggested that Devinder should be sacked from the party for his outburst against Amarinder and failure to appear before the committee by April 7 to defend his case .

Devinder had objections that a junior colleague was looking into the allegations against him and therefore chose not to appear before the committee. He had also said that he would not apologise at any cost.

Kishor, meanwhile, had met Devinder after his outburst against Amarinder and advised him against it.

While Devinder stopped criticising Amarinder, he spoke against the committee. The expulsion orders issued by Amarinder stated that Devinder had indulged in gross indiscipline, neither replied to the show cause nor appeared before the committee . Therefore, on the recommendations of the committee, he was being expelled from the party, it read further.

Devinder has, however, said he did not receive the expulsion orders. The expulsion letter, however, stated that he was sent the orders on three different mail addresses used by him for official communication in the recent past.
