A general house meeting at the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana,on Sunday, was disrupted due to an uproar against Chairman Lekh Raj Sharma and Honorary Secretary Amrik Singh Kalra to step down amidst charges of corruption. Elections have been scheduled for December, even as questions are being raised against the conduct of the protesting members.
The uproar began at the behest of a senior lawyer OP Sharma, who has been facing charges for opening fire against an advocate in Faridabad. He remained a proclaimed offender for four years and was arrested for three months. There is a case pending against him for molesting an MLA in Faridabad and an ADG in Delhi, Sharma said.
Some of the members, though, expressed their lack of faith in the present leadership and alleged illegalities and irregularities in recording the minutes of earlier meetings of the council.
We don’t have faith in the leadership and have decided to withdraw,by majority vote, the powers of the chairman and to replace the honorary secretary. We want to withdraw the authorisation of the chairman to constitute and re-constitute various committees at the Council and to take away the authorisation of the secretary to operate various bank accounts, said Anmol Sidhu,on behalf of the 13 members who signed a resolution stating the same
Sharma, however, denied all allegations and called the disruption to be ‘pre-meditated’ and as ‘unlawfully capturing the working of the council’.
Some of members raised objections to the amount of Rs 2 lakh allocated for accommodation of a Pakistan advocate delegation that visited India in December 2011,asserting that the grants by the council should be limited to ‘welfare activities’. Kalra, however, maintained that the allocation of funds for an activity may be approved by the majority even after the money is spent and claimed that circulars were issued to all members for an allocation as mentioned, which is considered a ‘duty’ of the council.
