G Gangatharan,a painter from Tamil Nadu,is an artist on a mission. In fact,Gangatharan plans to travel across the country, from the Himalayas to Kanyakumari,to connect with art lovers, draw inspiration and share perspectives on art. “The aim of my travelling show is not just to exhibit my works, but meet different people with various sensibilities,” he says, here in Chandigarh, while giving finishing touches to soon-to-be-exhibited paintings.
Gangatharan draws inspiration from both nature and human beings. “Colours and forms are the heart and soul of my paintings,” he says. The influence of local art from his immediate surroundings is apparent, the stone and bronze figurines transmuted into icons.
Human bodies and emotions being Gangatharan’s staple fare,he likes to display them through thick layers of oil, with crimson, grey and white being his favourite colours. “I want to explore and reveal what lies below those layers, amalgamating the real and the abstract,” he says.
Becoming a full-time painter was not easy. “There was a lot of struggle to pursue art, sell it and make a name. My father was a goldsmith and I was an artisan since childhood, making both jewellery and drawings. That was the beginning of my instruction in art,” he says. “A chance to express my feelings and colours on canvas was just a divine opportunity,” Gangatharan signs off.
