Police check hotels ahead of IPL matches

SAS NAGAR: The Special Branch of the Mohali Police conducted a surprise check on the city hotels on Sunday ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches to be played here. An eight-member team checked 18 city hotels. The hotels were physically verified and all their records checked. Inspector Tejinder Singh,in-charge of the special cell,said that they would be conducting similar checks in the coming days. Mohali is the base of the Kings XI Punjab who will be playing their first home match of this season against Pune Warriors India at the PCA stadium on April 12.

20-year-old labourer stabbed

CHANDIGARH: A 20-year-old resident of Burail was allegedly stabbed over an old dispute involving money on Sunday. Ram Ashish,a who works as a labourer,alleged that Burail resident Lucky stabbed him in the waist while he was returning home. The two reportedly entered into an argument after which Lucky stabbed him several times. Ashish was admitted to GMCH-32 where he is presently undergoing treatment.

LPG auto union threatens strike

CHANDIGARH: The LPG auto union have threatened to go on strike from May 1 if their demands are not met. The members of the union held a rally in Sector 34 on Sunday. President of the union Malkit Singh said that there is a need for hiking auto fares keeping in view the increasing rates of gas. He added that there was no check on the autos from the other states entering the city without permits. Members of the union stated that a large number of unauthorised vehicles were plying in the city,causing losses to them.

43 vehicles impounded for drink driving

CHANDIGARH: The traffic police impounded 43 vehicles during its anti-drunken driving drive on Saturday. Nakas were placed on four prominent roads of the city for the purpose and from 11.30 pm to 2.30 am. In a separate drive on Sunday,113 traffic violations slips were issued for over-speeding at the IT Park.
