A Punjab police constable,who was guarding the residence of an MLA was allegedly injured in a case of accidental firing in Sector 9 on Wednesday.

Chandigarh: A Punjab police constable,who was guarding the residence of an MLA was allegedly injured in a case of accidental firing in Sector 9 on Wednesday morning.

Police said constable Dev Raj deployed at the residence of MLA Banur,Jasjit Singh in Sector 9,was injured at around 10 am when a bullet hit him accidentally while head constable Salwasten Masih was cleaning his carbine. “The bullet hit the constable on his leg and he was rushed to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital,Sector 16 (GMSH-16) where his condition is stable,” an officer in Sector- 3 police station said. “The shootout created minor panic in the area. It took some time for other police men posted at the house to understand that the bullet went off accidentally.” A case was registered under section 336/337 (endangering life or personal safety) of Indian Penal Code in police station Sector 3. Police later arrested Salwasten Masih,who was released on bail.

UT appoints 3 Estate Officers

Chandigarh: The UT Administration has appointed three UT Estate Officers. These include Secretary Municipal Corporation Lalit Siwach. Additional Commissioner of MC Sunil Bhatia was assigned work of the properties falling under the jurisdiction of the civic body. Meanwhile Secretary,Chandigarh Housing Board M M Sabharwal was assigned work of properties falling under the jurisdiction of CHB.

Section 144 imposed in Sectors 20 and 22

Chandigarh: The UT Administration has imposed Section 144 near Jama Masjid in Sector 20 and Shastri Market in Sector 22. Raising slogans and making speeches within a radius of 200 metres of both the places has been prohibited. This would remain in affect on July 28. BJP leaders and party workers would be gathering at Sector 22. While in Sector 20,there was apprehension that people of the Muslim community would collect and try to move towards Raj Bhawan.

Sectors’ association meet civic body head

Chandigarh: Federation of Sectors Welfare Association Chandigarh held a meeting with the Municipal Commissioner to highlight a number of problems including poor maintenance of back service lanes,parking problems,construction of sehaj safai kendras,sanitation byelaws,menace of stray dogs and low water pressure among other things.

Mohali school wins Limca Book of Records Quiz

Sas Nagar: THE Chandigarh City finals of Limca Book of Records Quiz 2011 was won by the hosts Manav Mangal Smart School,Mohali. They will now be amongst the 80 schools to compete in the semifinals. Hansraj Public School,Panchkula emerged as the runners-up.

Two arrested for mobile phone theft

Chandigarh: The Police Control Room (PCR) wing of Chandigarh Police arrested two persons and recovered nine mobiles from them. The accused were identified as Mandeep and Ravi Ved both residents of Janta Colony,Nayagaon. A case was later registered in Sector 11 police station.The six finalists were: Manav Mangal Smart School,Mohali,Hansraj Public School,Panchkula,Bhavan Vidyalaya,Panchkula,Yadvindra Public School,St. Stephens and Bhavan Vidyalaya,Chandigarh.

Man arrested for assaulting lady

Chandigarh: A case has been registered in police station 34,Chandigarh against Ajay Gupta of Sector 19-D for allegedly beating,assaulting and threatened a lady near her house on July 26. The police arrested Gupta.
