An uncovered manhole has claimed the life of a six year old boy,Gautam,whose body was recovered from a sewage treatment plant on Thursday morning from Raipur Kalan village in Chandigarh.

CHANDIGARH: An uncovered manhole has claimed the life of a six year old boy,Gautam,whose body was recovered from a sewage treatment plant on Thursday morning from Raipur Kalan village in Chandigarh. Police said Gautam,had gone missing on Wednesday evening and had allegedly slipped into the uncovered manhole in the village.

Gautam’s father,Raju Kumar working in a hotel had filed a missing report with the police late on Wednesday night after his son did not not return home. Police said that the body was later taken to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital,Sector 16 (GMSH-16),for postmortem. Police have registered a case and started investigation.

Sanitation drive launched in Sector 25

CHANDIGARH: A sanitation drive was launched on Thursday at Janta and Kumhar Colony,Sector 25. Apart from deploying additional sweepers in the area,the Municipal Corporation would be holding activities to create awareness. The drive was flagged off by area councillor,Sheela Phool Singh along with other local leaders. Mechanical road sweepers,dumper placers,tractor trolleys and cycle rickshaw carts were deployed for sweeping and lifting the garbage. The area was sprayed by the Pest Control wing of the MC. Stickers carrying message of cleanliness were pasted on the walls and pamphlets were distributed to create awareness. Residents were asked not to litter on the streets and in open spaces as well as not burn garbage.

Weaker sections come under Shagun scheme

MOHALI: Extending the benefit of one of its flagship welfare schemes,the state government has covered all economically weaker sections (EWS) under its Shagun scheme,which provides Rs 15,000 for a girl’s marriage. Acting on government directives,the Mohali district administration has invited applications from persons with an annual income of up to Rs 30,000 to take advantage of the scheme. Deputy Commissioner,Varun Roojam said the benefit has also been extended to the second marriage of anybody covered under the stipulated income group. Moreover,if the applicant’s name already exists in the below poverty line (BPL) persons’ list or possesses a blue card for the subsidised ration,there was no need to give a separate income certificate.

10-year-old migrant boy missing

MOHALI: A 10-year-old migrant boy was reported missing from his house in Phase 3B2 here since June 2,the police said here today. The missing boy Suraj Yadav’s father Vijay Yadav reported to the police that Suraj had gone to play in the park in the vicinity of their house but did not returned back. After failing to trace the child despite frantic efforts,the family approached the police. The police have lodged a missing report and launched a hunt to trace the missing child.

Mandi resident held with stolen car

MOHALI: A resident of Chotra village in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh Ajay Thakur was arrested with an allegedly stolen car in Zirakpur,the police said here today. On a tip-off,Thakur was intercepted near Gurdwara Nabha Sahib where he was allegedly waiting for the customer to sell the ‘stolen’ car. The police have booked the accused for theft and recovery of stolen property under Sections 379 and 411 of the IPC and put him under sustained interrogation to ascertain his links,modus operandi and other associates,if any,in the crime.

Crane causes heavy destruction,blocks NH-21

MOHALI: An out of control crane led to the major destruction of public as well as private property besides badly disrupting the vehicular traffic on the busy Mohali-Kharar stretch of National Highway-21 near Daon village,close to Mohali,Thursday evening. However,any loss to life was averted.

A reckless crane driver lost control over the vehicle,following which it hit seven electricity supply poles,two transformers and a Chevrolet Tavera. As the poles and transformers were uprooted,the high tension power supply lines came crashing down and fell in the middle of the highway. It took almost two hours to restore the normal flow of traffic on the highway.Claiming a major financial loss,PSPCL officials have lodged a police complaint against the crane driver,who fled from the spot, leaving the vehicle behind.

Ten arrested for drinking in public place

CHANDIGARH The police arrested ten persons who were consuming liquor at public place. The arrested were lodged in police station sector 31 and all of them were later bailed out.
