Two arrested for theft
Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Police Crime Branch on Saturday arrested two youths allegedly involved in the recent spate of snatchings,auto-thefts and burglaries. The two are Sunil Kumar (19) and Sanjay Kumar (21),both residents of Bihar. The police said they set up a check-point near Sector 25/38 chowk on a tip-off and apprehended the duo who were coming on a motorcycle (PB-70-B-3696). The police said they tried to escape but were caught. The police recovered a laptop from their possession,which was stolen from Panjab University,Chandigarh. Satbir Singh,Deputy Superintendent of Police,Crime,said,We have recovered a motorcycle,a scooter,a laptop,three mobile phones from their possession.A local court sent the two to a days police custody.
GSSS-27 adopts Daria village for NSS camp
Chandigarh: A seven-day NSS camp was inaugurated in Government Senior Secondary School,Sec 27 C,on Saturday by State Liaison Officer Bikram Rana. Principal Sukhneer Sekhon,Vice-Principal Baljit Singh and 50 volunteers participated in the function. Sekhon said the school has adopted Daria village for development,adding that different activities will be organised during the camp. She motivated the students to understand the spirit of the people in their adopted village and work for their welfare. A langar was organised after the function.
National Pensioners Day observed
Chandigarh: The Punjab Government Pensioners Welfare Association observed Pensioners Day at the Community Centre in Sector 38. Discussions were held on how the Centres new pension reform schemes were aimed at doing away with pension. The members of the association said that such schemes will be detrimental for the well-being of the elderly who have worked all their lives. Their right to live comfortably was at stake. The association has demanded that the medical claim be increased from Rs 500 to Rs 1000 per month,and some money be provided towards maintenance of the houses.
