Cyclist mowed down by Scorpio
Mohali: A cyclist was mowed down by a Mahindra Scorpio near Mullanpur,Mohali,on Tuesday evening,the police said here on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Piara Singh,65,of Dulwan village near Mullanpur. The accident took place when Singh,who was in the property business,was peddling down to his home from Parol side and the speeding Scorpio,coming from the opposite direction,ran over him and sped away before anyone could even note down its registration number. The victim was rushed to PGIMER,Chandigarh,where he succumbed to his injuries,said the O Ajaib Singh.
NTAS gifts for Leprosy patients
Patiala: The National Theatre Arts Society (NTAS),Patiala,organised its 47th Annual New Year Leprosy Welfare Fund Raising Entertainment and Award Festival at Khushdeva Singh Leprosy Patients Colony. NTAS Director Pran Sabharwal said that Rs 16,650 was raised for the Leprosy Patients Welfare Fund,including a major amount by a local surgeon and a pathologist which was presented to the Kusht Ashram as a New Year Gift.
Dhillon to plead Centre cases before CAT
Chandigarh: Advocate Kamal Dhillon,who practises at the Punjab and Haryana High Court,has been appointed Additional Central Government Standing Counsel by the Union Government for conducting cases of the Central government before the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT),Chandigarh. He has also been given charge of additional government pleader by the UT Administration for representing the Administration in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Sa Re Ga Ma Pa winner honoured
Patiala: Kamal Khan,winner of the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa music competition,was honoured by Punjabi University Vice-chancellor Jaspal Singh during Mangal Kamna,a programme organised by the Universitys Directorate of Youth Welfare at Kala Bhawan here on Tuesday night. The V-C exhorted students to take inspiration from Kamal Khan. Khan said that it was the support and encouragement from his parents and friends which enabled him to bring honours to his state,city and village Reeth Kheri,about 15 km from Patiala.
SBoP revises interest rates on domestic term deposits
Patiala: The State Bank of Patiala (SBoP) has raised its term deposit rates by 50 basis points wef Wednesday for its existing and new customers. The interest rate for 555 and 999 days term deposits now stands increased to 9.25 per cent. The Interest rate for 15 to 45 days deposits is 5 per cent and 46 to 90 days is 5.50 per cent. The Increased interest rate for 91 to 180 days is now 6.25 per cent pa,181 days to less than one year is 8 per cent pa. For deposits of one year to 554 days and 556 days to two years,the bank is offering 9.25 per cent pa while for deposits of less than two years to 998 days and 1,000 days to less than three years,the interest rate is 9 per cent pa and for three years to less than five years the rate of interest is 8.25 per cent. For five years to less than eight years the rate of interest is 8.5 per cent and for eight years to 10 years the rate of interest is 8.75 per cent pa. Senior citizens will be given an additional rate of interest @ 0.5 per cent for a period of one year and above. Interest on the SBP Tax Saving Scheme is as existing at 8.50 per cent pa.
