Indias first military thriller novel,Lashkar,is on its way to Bollywood stardom
Tom Clancy,WEB Griffin and Alistair McLean. Entire generations in India have grown up reading about the exploits of literary daredevils in the West. For years there was no local representation to turn to,until the release of Mukul Devas Lashkar,in 2008. Widely recognised as Indias first military thriller, the ex-army officers work is now being turned into a film by Shubho Shekhar Bhattacharjee (left,in the picture). I started reading Lashkar around midnight and it was so enthralling that I was unable to put it down. Halfway through,I knew I had to turn it into a movie. I was awake the whole night, waiting impatiently for a decent hour to call the author,so that I could start working on the film, says Bhattacharjee.
The filmmaker has recently received the rights for the book and is eagerly waiting for the shooting to begin. The first draft of the script is ready and we will hopefully begin pitching the script to the actors within a month. The shoots will be arduous because the plot demands that the movie should have a lot of real-scene shots. We are looking at a August 2012 release, states Bhattacharjee.
Excited about the project,Deva says that he was expecting his books to be translated into movies. I never had any doubt that Lashkar would be made into a movie. Moreover, the timing is perfect,in terms of how the war on terror is heading, says the author. Talking about the recent trend of books being turned into films in Bollywood,Bhattacharjee adds,We have a bounty of literature, but the space for pulp fiction was very small. Now,with pulp fiction claiming its own niche in the Indian market, films like 3 Idiots are being made. In fact, the pulp fiction market has interested Bengali,Tamil and Telegu filmmakers for at least a decade.
