Six members of a family lost their lives while eight sustained injuries when the vehicle they were travelling in rolled down a deep gorge in Gohar of Mandi district,on the Pandoh-Kandha road,late on Tuesday night. They were returning from a pilgrimage to Kamrunag temple when the ten-seater vehicle met with the accident 25 kilometres away from the Mandi town.
Chand Ram (48) of Satyogi village in Gohar subdivision of Mandi,his wife Dolma (45),son Inder Singh (18),daughters Bhima Devi and Chamma Devi and their spouses and children had gone for the pilgrimage.
The deceased are Chand Ram,Dolma,Inder,Bhima Devi,Bhagat Ram (24) and Reeta Devi (17).
Naresh Kumar,who was driving the vehicle,is seriously injured and has been referred to the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Shimla,along with Chamma Devi. Among the other injured are Nareshs two minor daughters and four other relatives.
One of the injured,Neena Devi,who was pregnant,suffered a miscarriage,besides sustaining grievous injuries.
The family was only 50 metres short of their destination when the accident occurred.
The police said the cause of accident was not known yet. According to statements of the survivors,the driver lost control of the vehicle and it plunged into the gorge. Fourteen persons were on board the Tata Sumo, Superintendent of Police S M Agnihotri said from Mandi.
Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Jai Ram Thakur met the survivors at the Mandi Zonal Hospital and released a relief amount for the family.
