Kurukshetra, hotel room, suffocation,The men, who worked as painters, had arrived in Kurukshetra only on Monday.

Kurukshetra was shaken on Tuesday morning after five workers were found dead inside a hotel room. Preliminary investigation suggests they died of suffocation, having lit a brazier before going to bed.

All the victims hailed from a village in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Sub‑Inspector Kamal Kumar of Thanesar police confirmed that one of the deceased has been identified as Noor, a contractor, while the other four were labourers working with him. “They had lit a brazier in the room. It appears that gases accumulated as the room was shut from inside,” the officer said.

The men, who worked as painters, had arrived in Kurukshetra only on Monday. Hotel official Upender said: “In the morning our staff went for cleaning and noticed the room’s doors were closed with no movement inside. Even after knocking, there was no response. We informed the manager, who then contacted the police.”

Another police official explained the scene: “Through the control room we received information that labourers had come for painting. Their room was locked. After opening the door, when we looked inside, the brazier was still burning and coal was scattered. The doors and windows were shut tight. The investigation is continuing.”

The bodies were sent to LNJP Hospital in Kurukshetra for a postmortem examination, after which they will be handed over to the families.
