The symptoms of dengue include sudden high fever, severe headache, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, rash and deep muscle and joint pains. The rash usually shows up 3-4 days after the initial symptoms become visible and begins on the torso, spreading to the face, arms and legs.

A viral fever, dengue is spread by the Aedes Aegypti and Aedes Albopictus mosquitoes and has a short incubation period — usually two to seven days. Dengue becomes dangerous if hemorrhaging starts either external or internal. Nose bleeding is one of the main features of hemorrhagic dengue fever.

A number of precautions need to be taken to prevent the spread of dengue:
* Keep surroundings clean and dry
* Ensure there is no standing water in water-coolers,old tyres,flower-pots,etc
* Cover arms and legs and wear loose fitting cotton clothes
* In case bleeding starts, hospitalization is essential
