The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has brought back a man, wanted in a rape case in Karnataka and facing an Interpol red notice, from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), said officials.

The CBI on Friday said that its Global Operations Centre (GOC) in coordination with Interpol NCB — Abu Dhabi, Karnataka Police, and Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi (Ministry of External Affairs) — geolocated the accused, identified as Midhun V V Chandran (in his late 30s), in the UAE and the General Secretariat of Interpol issued a “red notice” against him in January 2023, based on Karnataka police request.

“Midhun V V Chandran was wanted by the Karnataka Police in a 2020 case of alleged rape, criminal intimidation, and other offences registered at the Mahadevapura police station in Bengaluru. The CBI facilitated the issuance of the Interpol red notice, on January 20 this year, on the request of the Karnataka Police against Chandran, who had escaped India after the registration of the case,” said a CBI spokesperson, on the condition of anonymity.

“The red notice was circulated among all the Interpol member countries for locating the accused and arresting him… He (Chandran) was earlier geolocated in the UAE through CBI follow-up,” the spokesperson added.

According to the FIR, in 2016 Chandran worked at a private firm in Bengaluru where he got into a relationship on the pretext of marriage with a colleague — 33 years now, and allegedly borrowed a lot of money from her.

He, however, later refused to marry her.

Based on a complaint filed by the victim on 1 February, 2020, an FIR was registered against Chandran under Indian Penal Code sections 376 (punishment for rape), 417 (cheating), 506 (criminal intimidation), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) at the Mahadevapura police station.

Another accused woman — identified as Geetha was also booked for her alleged involvement in the case, said police.

Chandran — who had been absconding since then — was nabbed and brought back from the UAE recently.

An Interpol red notice is a request to law enforcement agencies worldwide, to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender or similar legal action. According to the CBI, due to close coordination and follow-up with foreign law enforcement agencies through Interpol channels, 26 criminals wanted by Indian agencies have been returned from abroad in 2023. “The CBI, as the National Central Bureau for Interpol in India, coordinates with all law enforcement agencies in the country for assistance through Interpol channels,” the spokesperson added.
