Karnataka’s former Director General of Police (DGP) Om Prakash, 68, was found dead with multiple stab injuries at his residence in Bengaluru on Sunday, police said, adding that investigation is in progress. The former DGP’s wife Pallavi was detained later in the evening and was being questioned, sources said.

No arrest has been made so far, police said.

Additional Commissioner of Police (West) Vikash Kumar Vikash told reporters that a sharp weapon was found near the former DGP’s body. “We will ascertain later whether the same weapon or some other weapon was used for the murder,” he said.

The officer said police were informed about the incident at Prakash’s HSR Layout residence around 4.30 pm. “A complaint was filed by his son. Based on this, an FIR will be registered and we will investigate the case accordingly,” he said.

According to sources, Prakash was with wife Pallavi and daughter when the incident took place. Following the murder, the wife and daughter locked themselves in a room before police arrived, they said.

Vikash said, “There were three people (at the residence) when the incident happened. We are certain.”

Dismissing speculation surrounding the murder, including the possibility of a property dispute as the motive, the officer said the matter was still under investigation. Police will be able to share additional information once the site of crime is secured and post-mortem conducted, he said.

A native of Bihar, Prakash was a 1981-cadre IPS officer who started his career as additional SP of Ballari district. Apart from serving in various districts as SP, he was with Lokayukta Police and served as DIG of the Criminal Investigation Department before assuming charge as DGP in 2015. He retired in 2017.
