Cyber attack attempt on BWSSB’s Water connection portal, chairman says no sensitive data compromised
BWSSB chairman Ram Prasath Manohar said a formal complaint has been registered with the cybercrime police station.

An attempted cyber attack on the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board’s (BWSSB) water connection portal was successfully foiled earlier this month, said BWSSB chairman Ram Prasath Manohar Wednesday. He said initial investigations have confirmed that no sensitive customer data was compromised. A formal complaint has been registered with the cybercrime police station for further investigation, he added.
In a statement issued to the media, Manohar revealed that the attack occurred on the morning of April 11. Following an alert from the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), BWSSB’s technical team acted swiftly to contain the breach attempt.
The customer data of BWSSB is securely stored in the Karnataka State Data Centre. The attempted breach focused on the portal linked to connection applications, which contained limited and recent applicant data. Preliminary analysis confirmed that while a small portion of data was accessed, no sensitive or confidential customer information was leaked, as per BWSSB.
Data migrated to centralised servers
As a precautionary step, all relevant data from the affected portal has been transferred to more secure centralised servers, the press release said. BWSSB said it is actively evaluating the implementation of blockchain technology to enhance digital security.
“Recognised for its transparency, immutability, and tampering resistance, blockchain is considered a long-term solution to fortify the Board’s digital infrastructure,” the press release said.
“A comprehensive investigation is underway, and stringent legal action will be initiated against those involved in any attempted data theft or misuse,” Manohar said.
BWSSB assured the public that it is continuously upgrading its digital systems to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of public services.
BSWBB recently announced a hike in water tariffs in Bengaluru. It stated that the new tariff will take effect from the May bill cycle, and the hike depends on the amount of water used by a household or an apartment complex.
