A Dutch vlogger visiting Bengaluru’s Chickpet Market was allegedly manhandled by a local trader, and police said on Monday that the trader was arrested after a video of the incident went viral.

According to police sources, Pedro Mota, a citizen of the Netherlands, was recording his experience when the trader forcefully grabbed his hand and confronted him for filming his wares. Despite Mota’s pleas to let go of him, he was pushed by the trader.

Pedro Mota, who has a following of more than 29,000 subscribers on YouTube, posted the video on Sunday. He titled it “Attacked At The Thieves Market In India”. He wrote, “Foreigners traveling in India experience the thieves market in Bangalore, also known as the sunday market or chor bazaar. But exploring the area started out on the wrong foot as an angry man attacked me by grabbing and twisting my hand and arm, lunging after me as I tried to escape. After I had some street food, met great local Indian people and haggled for a new buttoned shirt.”

With many people coming to his support, Pedro Mota wrote, “Sometimes it’s just one of those days and you come across the wrong person. What’s the craziest thing that’s ever happened to you in your country or abroad? By the way everyone, thanks for all the well wishes and please don’t worry about my perception of India since as you’ve probably seen in many of my videos by now, a guest in this country truly is treated with great consideration.”

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Laxman B Nimbargi said, “The incident took place two months ago when he was attacked. We have arrested Nawab Sharif (58), who is a former autorickshaw driver working as a cloth merchant. The incident was reported in Sultanpet, where Nawab assumed that his business would be affected as Pedro was making videos and may inform the police about selling old clothes. A complaint was filed by Mudassir Ahmed on Twitter about the incident. Nawab has been arrested and charged under the Karnataka Police Act.”

Police Commissioner B Dayananda tweeted, “It’s an old video which has come into circulation now. The person harassing in the video has been identified, traced and action taken. No scope for such highhandedness in Namma Bengaluru against anybody.”
