Indira Canteen to open at Bengaluru airport by month end: BBMP
An Indira Canteen will open for the public at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) by January end. As per the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike’s (BBMP) estimates, the new canteen is expected to serve around 2,000 customers daily, which will mostly benefit airport cab drivers and BMTC bus drivers, among others. The canteen, along with the kitchen, is being constructed at a cost of Rs 1.35 crore.
The setting up of Indira Canteen at the airport has been a long-standing demand of the cab drivers’ association. It was one of the 36 demands submitted by the federation of cab and auto drivers’ association to transport minister Ramalinga Reddy. The demand comes in view of drivers experiencing a stressful work life commuting between the airport and the city, and also suffering due to the exorbitant food rates at restaurants at the airport terminal.
Following the demand, Reddy had directed BBMP to fast track the process of setting up the Indira Canteen at the airport.
According to Siraj Ahmed Madani, chief health officer of BBMP, the canteen will be located at the parking 7 area near Terminal 1 of the airport. The contract for setting up the canteen is awarded to Excel Precast Solution, which was responsible for setting up Indira Canteens in BBMP zones of Bengaluru.
“The Indira Canteen at the airport will be a rectangular structure, which will consist of a kitchen and canteen. We will be operating the canteen just like ones in the BBMP zones. The canteen will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with the same menu and rate card in line with other canteens,” said Madani.
