Videos of Indian cities that highlight the littering problem as well as paan stains continue to emerge on social media. A recent clip of Anand Vihar’s bus interchange, which is one of the busiest transport hubs in New Delhi, has irked the Internet, igniting a public outcry over the lack of civic sense in the country.
Shared by an X handle @MeruOnX, the now-viral video shows piles of garbage, dust, plastic wrappers, and tobacco stains all over the escalator and the foot overbridge at the Anand Vihar bus interchange. The video captures several commuters walking through piles of litter.
“Repeat after me: “Don’t blame the government for not providing facilities- blame the people with zero civic sense creating this mess.” This is Anand Vihar, one of India’s busiest bus interchanges,” the caption read.

The video has since gone viral, prompting a deluge of reactions. “Firstly it is government’s responsibility to keep infrastructure clean everyday, which govt fails to do, when garbage piles up, no one thinks twice to throw garbage on top of garbage. Responsibility is on both sides,” a user wrote.
“Before questioning the government, we must learn civic sense. A disciplined society forces better governance. Responsibility starts with people, not excuses,” another user commented.
“It’s so painful to see such pictures. At the end of the day, it’s taxpayers’ money. Those using this escalator have also paid tax. What people of this nation lack is inclusiveness,” a third user reacted.
Last week, a video of Varkala beach in Kerala, littered with plastic and other waste, triggered outrage on social media. The viral clip showed bottles, packets, food wrappers, and beer cans across the sand. The creator, who shared the video, highlighted that the situation worsened at night, with the iconic Varkala cliff area getting heavily littered.
