In a break with tradition,office-bearers of BJP-led Rajkot Municipal Corporation did not print the name of Municipal Commissioner Ajay Bhadu as one of the hosts on the invitation cards for the foundation stone-laying ceremony of a community hall last month. This has now been repeated in the invite for dedication of a community hall on Saturday. The RMC grapevine has it that the commissioner and the new team of officer-bearers headed by mayor Raksha Boliya had difference of opinion over awarding contract for city bus service in May. Then the commissioner made it mandatory to seek prior approval of his office for incurring certain expenses at public functions. But a top civic officer says the political wing is not legally obliged to carry the commissioners name as invitee.
Varachhas showstopper
In a bizarre case of Annagiri, the traffic woes of Varachha main road area in Surat pained the BJP MLA of the area Kishor Kanani to such an extent that he along with his supporters will come out on the streets on Sunday afternoon to control the traffic flow. Kanani decided to play role of traffic police after finding them ineffective despite several representations. He even wrote letters to Surat Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthaana with tips to solve the problems, but all in vain. As the news spread, support poured in from several educational institutions,NGOs and people of more than 50 residential societies in Varachha and Kapodara areas. Kanani, however, had the last word,I am elected by the people of my Varachha and have assured my voters that I am here to help them on their issues. Traffic is the main issue here and the police does not take interest in it. So we will continue controlling traffic every Sunday till police takes some stern action.
Parliament pilgrimage
Over a hundred BJP party workers are preparing to make a trip to Parliament, courtesy Vadodara MP Balkrishna Shukla. They include corporators, officers of various wards of the Vadodara Muinicipal Corporation and others who work for the party and want to enjoy the privileged tour facilitated by the MP himself. Shukla says he has not discriminated among people who want to visit Parliament on his recommendation. This will not be the first time that a group of people will take a trip to Parliament from Vadodara. Only last year, over seven dozen visitors from Vadodara took a rail trip to Delhi to visit Parliament as well as Akshardham Temple. Im just the facilitator, Shukla said.
Mural matters!
The fresh batch of fine arts students at C N Vidyalaya College of Fine Arts were in for a pleasent surprise on day one of their joining college. They were greeted by none other than noted artist, painter, sculptor and Padma Bhushan recipient Jatin Das who made a whistle-stop tour in the city on Thursday. While the artist created quite a flutter on the campus as he passionately held forth on art to the young aspiring artists, what also brings him to Ahmedabad is a 500-sq-foot mural that he will be making at the private residence of Gautam Adani. On being pressed for the theme or inspiration to the mural,Das said,I would prefer not to talk about the mural in absentia, but Id say is that its a going to be a large piece of work!
