In an embarrassing incident, thieves struck the residence of a police inspector on the New Sama road in Vadodara and decamped with gold and silver jewellery worth Rs 1.4 lakh.

The theft took place at inspector Ashok Katkar’s residence at Sundar Van Society on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.

At the time of the incident,Katkar and his family members were at his native village in Zalod taluka in Dahod district, police said on Monday.

When Katkar returned home on Monday,he found locks of his house were broken and jewellery were missing from a safe.

Katkar is posted at the Police Training School in Pratapnagar area.

“The PI had not pasted any nameplate in blue and red colour of police or left any other mark indicating his being a policeman’s residence. We suspect the thieves did not know that it was a policeman’s home,” said Fatehgunj police inspector N V Patel.

“FSL officials have found fingerprints on some objects in the house and are matching them with records available with us,” Patel said, adding that further investigation was on.
