The Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) has launched a nationwide drive to celebrate Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday on Wednesday as “Jewellers Day”, aiming to encourage over one lakh jewellery manufacturers and artisans to pledge online to donate blood during emergencies or when required throughout the year.

GJEPC Gujarat Chairman Jayanti Savaliya said, “It is not the GJEPC initiative; it is the industry’s collective movement. We are urging all the jewellers and associations to come forward and demonstrate our unity and compassion to the world”.

“The GJEPC has a pre-registration of 1 lakh people across the country and aims to reach 2 lakh registrations, targeting a Guinness World Record for the most people taking a pledge in a single day from a single industry,” added Savaliya.

GJEPC sources said earlier an awareness campaign had been carried out to apprise the members about the pledge of the diamond and jewellery industries in Surat, other parts of Gujarat, and across the country.

“The factory owners had been told to ensure that all the artisans should take a pledge with the help of their mobile phone. The database of pledge holders collected will be compiled by pincode numbers. This database will be shared with the hospitals, NGO, and blood banks,” said Savaliya.

Diamond and jewellery artisans interested in sending birthday wishes to the PM can upload their 15-second videos on http://www.jewellersday.com, said sources.

To take the pledge, the GJEPC sources said people have to open jewellersday.com website, scan a QR code, click on start now button, add mobile number and press continue button before adding their personal details.
