At least 19 people, including six children, were rescued after a three-storey building housing at least two hospitals, medical labs and other shops caught fire in Bhavnagar city on Tuesday morning.
The blaze took place at Samip Complex, a building located just behind Bhavnagar Civil Hospital.
Though the fire was limited to the basement of the building, the thick plumes of smoke and soot spread to the stairwell to the other floors, creating tension.
Fire fighters from Bhavnagar Fire and Emergency Services (BFES) reached the spot by 9:50 am.
The firefighters managed to bring the fire under control in an operation that lasted about 3 hours, said Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Pradyumansinh Jadeja.
As the stairway was filled with smoke, the firefighters used an external ladder to rescue 19 people, including six children, who had been admitted to the pediatric facility. Later, they were moved to another hospital by ambulance.
A total of 50 firefighters and five vehicles were involved in the operation.
Officials said 12 two-wheelers and four cars parked in the basement were gutted.
No casualties were reported.
