Assets of Jaishankar, his spouse saw 29.4% rise in 4 yrs, according to Rajya Sabha affidavit

The minister’s “cash in hand” also reduced to Rs 80,000 from Rs 1.2 lakh four years ago.

In the four-year tenure as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, the total assets of Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his spouse grew by 29.4 per cent that includes the acquisition of an apartment at Vasant Vihar in New Delhi.

The minister declared assets worth Rs 20.09 crore, which includes two houses in Delhi (including the new apartment) and a 1.5-acre agricultural land in Shimla, the minister’s affidavit stated as he filed the nomination as a Rajya Sabha member from Gujarat Monday.

In his 2019 affidavit, the BJP leader had declared personal assets worth Rs 15.52 crore.

While salary and income from rent are the primary sources of earning for Jaishankar, his spouse Koyoko Somekawa Jaishankar — a consultant for Delhi International Airport and GMR Hyderabad International Airport — earns primarily from consultancy fees. His spouse also has GST dues worth Rs 1.12 lakh.

Apart from acquisition of immovable assets, value of his other possessions like jewellery and deposits in foreign banks including those in Singapore, Tokyo and Washington DC have also increased. However, the offshore deposits of his wife reduced from Rs 29.12 lakh to Rs 24.46 lakh in 2023. His spouse has deposits in banks in Washington DC and Tokyo.

The affidavit shows that the amount of personal loans or advances given by Jaishankar and his spouse have decreased from Rs 5.25 crore in 2019 to Rs 18.48 lakh this year. The minister’s “cash in hand” also reduced to Rs 80,000 from Rs 1.2 lakh four years ago.
