Minority report

Ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, politicians cutting across party lines in the state are seizing every opportunity to appear minority friendly.

Ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, politicians cutting across party lines in the state are seizing every opportunity to appear minority friendly. This was evident on Eid when a deluge of congratulatory hoardings flooded roadsides in prominent localities. Put up by local political figures, one of these hoardings had the photos of a dozen politicians in Ahmedabad. Congress leaders as wells as local BJP workers from the minority community adorned such hoardings in localities with considerable Muslim presence. Interestingly, the hoardings lasted well beyond one week of the main celebrations. This was for the first time that a Muslim festival caught the fancy of politicians.

Politicians’ photo-op

The crash-landing of a private helicopter in a busy locality of Ahmedabad last Thursday triggered high drama. The chopper, carrying Narayan Sai,son of spiritual guru Asaram Bapu, made an emergency landing in a graveyard safely. Taking advantage of the situation, some politicians reached the spot in no time and got themselves photographed. In the photos, they looked like they had just hunted down a tiger.

Trickle mantra

After dedicating a 27-km-long pipeline that will supply water to the BSF’s Dharamshala border outpost in Kutch,Chief Minister Narendra Modi was asked to plant a ceremonial sapling on the Independence Day. “It’s good that the water has reached here. But now install a drip irrigation system to save it,” Modi was overheard telling BSF’s Gujarat frontier IG A K Sinha while planting the tree. Incidentally,Modi has been addressing farmers during Krishi Mahotsav in the state and advises them to adopt drip irrigation to save water.

Modi gets ‘snappy’

After delivering an Independence Day speech attacking the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh,Modi was in his element. During his visit to the BSF outpost in Dharamshala,Modi “inaugurated” a war memorial and then readily agreed for a photo-shoot for the media. He even invited mediapersons to click pictures with him, their arms around his shoulders. Not stopping at this,a beaming Modi borrowed a camera from a photographer and took a picture of the media contingent to the discomfort of his personal security officers.
