Three sugarcane farm labourers were severely wounded when a leopard attacked them in the early hours of Monday in Mandvi taluka of Surat district.
Many labourers from Maharashtra come to Surat every March to work in the sugarcane fields. They generally stay in makeshift accommodations on the outskirts of the villages.
The leopard attack was reported from Jarimora village where nearly 25 families had put up make-shift shelter.
Sunil Vadvi (20),Sunil Maurya (15) and Sanjay Shinde (20)all residents of Nandurbar taluka in Maharashtra are now being treated at the Sardar Smarak Hospital in Bardoli. Mauryas condition is reported to be critical.
Forest Officer (Mandvi South) Natu Chaudhary expressed complete ignorance about the issue. We have no information about the incident. Leopard sightings in Mandvi villages are quite regular. We will send our teams to the village and place cages to catch the animal, he said.
