The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) along with Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) Wednesday rescued 12 crew members of a merchant vessel which sank in the North Arabian Sea while on its voyage from Gujarat’s Porbandar to Iran’s Bandar Abbas port, according to an ICG statement issued on Thursday.
The vessel ‘MSV Al Piranpir’ sank on Wednesday outside Indian waters, within Pakistan’s search and rescue region, said the statement. The Indian Coast Guard carried out the rescue operation in collaboration with the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA), and “the humanitarian search and rescue Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres (MRCCs) maintaining continuous communication throughout the operation”.
“The mechanized sailing vessel, which had departed from Porbandar and was enroute to Bandar Abbas Port in Iran, reportedly sank in the morning hours of December 4 due to rough seas and flooding,” said the statement. The distress call was received by ICG’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Mumbai, which alerted ICG Regional Headquarters (North West) in Gandhinagar.
Indian Coast Guard vessel ICGS Sarthak was immediately diverted to the reported location. MRCC Pakistan was also contacted to alert the mariners in the area, and their assistance was swiftly provided, said the statement.
“ICGS Sarthak proceeded at maximum speed to the probable location and conducted an extensive search operation. The 12 crew members, who had abandoned their vessel and taken refuge in a small dinghy, were located, and rescued approximately 270 km west of Dwarka, within Pakistan’s Search and Rescue Region,” said the ICG.
