Gujarat Minister for Women and Child Development Anandiben Patel said on Friday that the government was planning to set up district level committees to handle cases related to domestic violence against women. Speaking on the sidelines of an art and craft exhibition that she inaugurated,the minister said that although the task force recommended by the Domestic Violence Act has not been setup by the Centre,Gujarat has taken special initiative to establish such committees. “The Gujarat government has been doing a lot for women’s empowerment in the state. It has recently passed a bill ensuring 50 per cent reservation for women in local bodies. Women need to come forward to take part in decision making,” Patel said. “We have established 19 Nari Adalats (women courts),which deal especially with issues related to women,across the state. They have been working well in getting justice for women,” she added. She said that various institutions like the Women Economic Development Corporation and Gender Resource Centre have been established for economic and social empowerment of women.

Witnesses identify 6 accused in Naroda massacre case
Two eyewitnesses in the 2002 Naroda Gam Massacre case,on Friday,identified six accused in the Special Trial Court of Sessions Judge S H Vora. Eleven persons were killed in the massacre and the case has been further investigated by the Supreme Court appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT). Some of the senior leaders who have been arrested in the case include BJP MLA Maya Kodnani and former VHP General Secretary Jaydeep Patel.
The two witnesses who deposed before the court and identified six accused were Bhikhabhai Mansuri and Zakirhussain Malik. While Mansuri identified four accused,Malik identified two of them.

State inks deal for Dahej PCPIR

Two arrested with claws of Asiatic lions
RAJKOT: In what suggests a possibility of poaching of Asiatic lions,the Savarkundla city police arrested two persons with nine claws of these big cats,estimated to be worth Rs 2.5 lakh,on Friday evening. The seized claws have been sent to a forensic laboratory for test. In a sting operation supervised by Savarkundla DySP J Thakkar,the police arrested two residents of the area — Allarakha Bhiku and Dhiru Khatrani. “They demanded Rs 2.5 lakh for the claws. As soon as they displayed it,we arrested them,” said an officer of the Savarkundla police. “They will be produced before a local court to seek their custody,” the officer added. Sources said the police and the Forest department had been on alert about poaching activity in the area. Forest officials,however,said nothing can be said at this point. “No carcass has been found. We need to investigate from where and how they got the claws,and if these are real,” said Gir East Range DFO J Rana. A part of the Gir East Division falls under Dhari range that is adjacent to Savarkundla taluka in Amreli. In 2004,poaching was reported for the first time from the Gir sanctuary when as many as nine Asiatic lions were killed allegedly by members of a poaching gang from MP.
